Data corruption and loss

Data corruption refers to errors in computer data that occur during writing, reading, storage, transmission, or processing, which introduce unintended changes to the original data.

If the data is corrupted, you will see the error message below after arching/extracting.

crc error

There are many causes of data corruption like below:

Corrupt due to a bug in the archiving program

If there is a bug in the archiving program, the archived files could be corrupted.

Damage while sending the files through the Internet

If the network is frequently unstable, the transferred files could be damaged.

Files stored on cloud storage servers

If archived files are stored on cloud storage servers which use low-cost equipment, the files could be corrupted due to hardware malfunctions.

Hardware malfunction of hard disk drive or USB memory

If the hard disk drive or USB memory has a physical problem, data corruption will occur.

In most cases, you will not be able to recover the corrupted data when archive files are broken.

How to prevent data corruption and backup important files

Backup your files to multiple computers

If it is possible, you'd better not delete the original data and backup your files to at least two different storage devices.

Use different data storage devices

If you backup data to the same storage device, you could lose data when the storage device is corrupted. Please backup data to different data storage devices.

Use the "Test Archive" function to check whether compression is good

Compressed formats, such as ZIP format, store the CRC checksum information.

If you use the "Test Archive" function of Bandizip, you can check whether the compressed file is corrupted or not.
